Boys Break Three Sectional Records while Placing 1 st in Five Events

The Boardman Spartan Swim and Dive Teams qualified a record number of athletes to compete in the 2017 Northeast District Division I High School Swimming and Diving Championships in Cleveland. Seventeen swimmers and five divers will represent the Spartans at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on the campus of Cleveland State University. The divers will compete on Thursday and the swimmers will compete on Saturday at noon with the goal of qualifying to the state meet the following weekend in Canton. In the swimming events the top two place finishers from each of the four district meets will automatically qualify for the state meet. The additional 16 qualifiers for each event will be selected by the times swam at the district meets across the state. The divers will qualify 6 to the state meet from each district.

The boys broke 3 sectional meet records in both the 200 medley and 400 free relays and the 50 freestyle. Freshmen Matthew DunLany and Noah Basista were joined by Juniors Kyle Kimerer and Callen Aulizia on the record setting relays. In the 200 medley relay, the old sectional mark of 1:38.43 was set in 2005 by North Canton Hoover. Boardman’s posted the new record time of 1:37.10 in the winning effort. In the 400 freestyle relay the same four boys posted the winning record time of 3:13.49 breaking Hoover’s 2012 time of 3:15.04.
