Spartans are 3-1 after the first weekend of competition!

Boardman Swim Teams Post Three Wins and One Loss in First Week of Competitions Boys Set Two Pool Records at Warren Harding

Spartan Junior Kyle Kimerer broke the Warren Harding pool record in the 100 butterfly in Saturday’s quadrangular meet against Harding, Wooster, and Canfield. Kimerer and teammate’s freshmen Noah Basista, Mathew DunLany, and junior Callen Aulizia also shattered the 400 free relay pool record. Both the girl’s team and the boy’s team placed first in the quadrangular meet. Boardman took first places in 16 out of the 24 events.

Head coach Terry O’Halloran had this to say about the opening week’s results:

Our athletes recovered very quickly from the double loss against Hoover Friday night. We had a solid lineup where we felt we had most of our swimmers and divers in the right places to be competitive. Seeing our swimmers breaking pool records is always a crowd pleaser but how we pulled out the girl’s win by one point in the final event was the highlight of the meet. We were down by 5 points against Wooster going into the final 400 free relay. We needed a first and third place against Wooster to win the meet by one point. Our “A” relay won by 3 seconds, Wooster was second and our “B” relay had to get the third place. Junior Sarah Murray was even with Wooster swimmer Kim Min-Kyung at the 75 yard mark and fought her off on the last length with a stronger kick to win the relay by one second. The Wooster girls were favored to win and the Spartan upset really fired up our teams.

Kyle Kimerer’s pool record butterfly time in the 100 was 52.26 besting the mark of 52.39 set in 2012 by Boardman’s Ryan Bailey. Former Spartan state division one butterfly champion Bailey is now in his final year of swimming at United States Naval Academy and was recently voted team captain by his midshipmen teammates. Kimerer and teammates Aulizia, Basista, and DunLany knocked 2 seconds off the 400 free relay pool record with a time of 3:18.28. The previous mark, 3:20.18, was set last year by Boardman at the 2016 AAC by Kimerer, Aulizia, Aaron DunLany, and Ethan Schwendeman. Double individual winners include the following: Aulizia posted double wins in both meets in the 50 and 100 free events. In the quad meet, Kimerer won the 100 fly and the 200 free. Basista won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke and Sophomore Jennah Markovitch took firsts in the 50 and 100 free events. Senior diver Madison Rast won the 1 meter diving event in both meets.
