Callen Aulizia and Aaron DunLany Win Two Sectional Titles
Kyle Kimerer, Aaron DunLany, Callen Aulizia and Senior Ethan Schwendeman now hold the Boardman High School record in the 400 freestyle relay. The Spartans placed second at the Northeast Sectionals in Canton in a new record time of 3:16.59. The old record of 3:17.14 was set in 2007 by Spartan swimmers Michael Barringer, Kenny Drombosky, Brian Worhatch, and Conner O’Halloran. Their record time will seed them third behind second seeded Green at 3:15.93 and first seeded Brecksville-Broadview at 3:12.06. The same four boys rang up a second place in the 200 free relay at sectionals in the time of 1:30.47. The 200 free relay will be seeded 4th at districts. Callen Aulizia placed first in the 100 freestyle at the Northeast Sectional Tournament. His winning time of 47.25 will seed him third at the Northeast District Championships at Cleveland State this Saturday. His third place time of 21.59 in the 50 freestyle will seed him 6th at districts. Teammate Aaron DunLany took first at the sectional meet in the 500 freestyle. His time of 4:55.92 will seed him 5th at districts. DunLany’s third place finishing time of 1:47.83 in the 200 freestyle will seed him 6th at districts. Kyle Kimerer placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.60. He is seeded in the 5th position at districts. Kimerer also will be seeded 10th at districts in the 100 butterfly. Sophomore David Giancola posted a career best time of 1:00.60 in the 100 backstroke. He advanced to districts and will be seeded 29th.
Senior co-captain Corie Kuras took second place in the 100 freestyle and third place in the 50 freestyle. Her 50 time of 24.72 was the second best in the 31 year history of varsity swimming at Boardman High School. She will be seeded 6th at districts. Her 100 free time of 55.33 will seed her 12th. Kuras anchored both the 200 and 400 free relays that qualified for districts. Kuras, freshman Jennah Markovitch, Juniors Kelsey Calpin and Lindsay O’Nesti posted a time of 3:51.29 in the 400 free relay which will seed them 15th at districts. The Spartan 200 free relay of Kuras, Markovitch, Junior Sidney Hull, and Sophomore Ella Hare swam a time of 1:45.21 and will be seeded 16th at the district meet. Markovitch was one of the few freshmen in the meet to qualify two events for districts. Her events were the 200 individual medley, seeded 34th, and the 100 freestyle, seeded 36th in districts. Her qualifying time of 56.93 in the 100 free and 2:23.86 in the IM were career best times. Calpin also qualified in the 100 butterfly in the 39th position in a career best time of 1:06.22. The top two place finishers in swimming at districts automatically advance to the Ohio State High School Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton February 26-27. Sixteen at-large qualifiers for each event will be selected by comparing times among the district meets in Toledo, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland.
In the 1-meter diving Junior Dominic Mariano is seeded 11th while placing in 6th at sectionals with an 11 dive score of 375.25. Junior Madison Rast is seeded in the 24th position while placing 6th at the sectional meet with an 11 dive score of 293.85. This year the top six divers will advance from the districts to the state meet in Canton. Coach Terry O’Halloran reflected on the Canton Sectionals. “In swimming and diving it is easy to measure success. Almost all of our swimmers and divers posted career best times or scores. Our top athletes performed well even though they were not completely rested. The Cleveland district champs and our state meet in Canton are considered the best high school competitions in the country. We still have a lot of work to do this weekend and our district qualifiers will be ready for the action. Go Spartans!”
