Spartans Snap 10 Year Old School Record in the 200 Freestyle Relay
Callen Aulizia is now one of top two fastest sophomore sprinters in Ohio. Aulizia placed 6th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.11. His times of 21.06 in the 50 free and the 46.49 in the 100 free the week before at the district meet ranks him as the second fastest sprinter in school history. His 100 free time of 47.10 placed 14th at this year’s state meet. Senior Aaron DunLany placed 23rd in the 500 freestyle in the time of 4:50.16. DunLany now hold school records in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Aulizia anchored the record setting 200 freestyle relay with teammates DunLany and Senior Ethan Schwendeman, and Sophomore Kyle Kimerer. The Spartans placed 10th overall in the 200 relay at the championship meet. Their time of 1:27.23 broke the old mark of 1:27.40 set in 2007 by Mike Barringer, Kenny Drombosky, Brian Worhatch, and Conner O’Halloran. The same four swimmers placed 14th in the 400 free relay in the time of 3:13.07 narrowly missing the school record time of 3:13.06 they set the previous week at the district meet in Cleveland.
“Qualifying for the Division I State Swimming Championships is not an easy task. Coming back for Saturday night finals in 4 out of 5 events is an outstanding accomplishment for these young men. The guys started working to reach this goal on our first day of practice back in November. Now they own two school records and earned All-Ohio Honors for their efforts. It reinforces how powerful team chemistry and motivation can be in athletes reaching their potential. We are also very proud that this was our 17th consecutive year of qualifying swimmers for the Division I Swimming Championships. Coaching chemistry is also an integral part of this streak. Assistant coaches Carlo Cordon, Chad DeAngelo, and Ron Navarra are always inventing different ways to make our kids better. Having a strong parent support group caps it all off. They send us to clinics, feed our swimmers on away meets, and do whatever it takes to enhance our program.” (Coach Terry O’Halloran)
The Spartan swimmers and divers won both the boys and girls 2016 AAC Championships. The boys finished the dual meet season with a 12 – 3 record and the girls posted a 10 – 4 – 1 record. The end of the year banquet honoring the team will be held at the Avion on the Water Banquet Center Wednesday, March 9th at 5:30pm.
