Spartan Swimmers Break Five Records in Week Two and Take First Place in the Northeast Ohio 7 Team Relay Championships
The Spartan boys’ team collected one school record, one Northeast Ohio Relay Meet record, and three Massillon Jackson pool records in meets this past weekend. Senior Kyle Kimerer posted a time of 1:45.56 in the 200 freestyle breaking the Boardman school record time of 1:45.88 set in 2016 by Aaron DunLany. An hour later Kimerer broke a Massillon Jackson pool record in the 100 butterfly with his first place time of 51.94. At the end of the meet Kimerer teamed with Senior Callen Aulizia and sophomores Mathew DunLany and Noah Basista to take first in the 400 freestyle relay in a new Jackson pool record time of 3:18.53. Right before the 400 relay Basista took down the 100 breaststroke pool record placing first in the time of 1:00.88. Friday night’s dual meet at Massillon Jackson was won on both the sides by the Polar Bears by the boy’s score of 92 to 84 and the girl’s score of 113.5 to 72.50. After week two both Spartan teams are 3-2 in dual meet competition.
Boardman Girls and Boys Swimmers Open the Season by Posting Three Wins and One Loss
After losing Friday night at North Canton Hoover, the Spartan swim teams bounced back Saturday by defeating Wooster, Canfield, and Warren Harding at a quadrangular meet at Youngstown State’s Beeghly Natatorium. The Hoover boys won by 105 to 80 and the girls by 103 to 75. At the quadrangular meet the scores were as follows: Girls Boardman 188, Wooster 172, Warren Harding 84, and Canfield 78. Boys Boardman 196, Canfield 156, Wooster 128, and Warren Harding 66.
Senior Kyle Kimerer and Sophomore Noah Basista were double individual winners at both competitions. Kimerer won both the 200 free (1:47.05, 1:47.29) and the 100 butterfly (51.94, 51.73) events. Basista won both the 200 individual medley (1:59.97, 2:01.35) and the 100 breaststroke ( 100.40, 1:01.43) events. On the girl’s side senior diver Megan Janak took a first place both Friday (182.10 pts) and Saturday 208.50 pts).

7th Place 400 Freestyle Relay Breaks School Record Pushing the
Spartan Boy’s Team to a 10th Place Finish Overall
Two time state qualifier Callen Aulizia dropped 4 tenths of a second placing him third in the 50 freestyle at the Ohio Division I Swimming Championships in Canton. His time of 20.61 was only 16 one-hundreths of a second behind North Canton Hoover’s Nathaniel Mullens who clocked a winning time of 20.45. Aulizia’s time also tied the Boardman High School record set in 2003 by three time state champion Tyler O’Halloran and automatically qualified him as an All-American in the 50 freestyle. Callen swam a time of 46.03 in the finals of the 100 freestyle which moved him from 8 th to 7 th place. He was joined by teammates Junior Kyle Kimerer, Freshman Matthew DunLany, and Freshman Noah Basista in the school record breaking 400 freestyle relay. The Spartans placed 8th in the finals with the time of 3:10.01. Earlier in the evening the same four boys placed 9 th in 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.94. That time was the second fastest medley relay time in the 32 year history of Boardman High School swimming. All four boys earned “2017 All-Ohio Swim Team” honors for finishing in the top 16 in the state. Overall the Spartan Boy’s Swim Team placed 10 th in the state with 68 points. The point total and the 10th place finish was the highest ever for a Spartan team. Coach Terry O’Halloran had this to say about the team’s performance. “Our four underclassmen did a terrific job under a lot of pressure this past weekend. They were mentally focused for their races. They went their fastest times when it counted. They worked hard throughout the year in and out of the pool.
