Spartan Girls Break Two School Records and Three Meet Records

Boardman Juniors Brooke Bailey and Sarah Gonda broke two school records at the 2014 N. E. A. C.  Championships at Wooster High School this past Saturday.  Sarah posted a time of 59.91 and placed first in the 100 backstroke breaking her previous record time of 1:00.92 set in December.  Brooke reset her 500 freestyle record by posting a first place time of 5:18.25 breaking the old mark of 5:19.57 set in 2013.  Brooke also was the conference champion and set a new meet record in the 100 yard breaststroke.  Her record time of 1:06.67 broke the old record of 1:07.89 set in 2007 by Stacy Clagg from Glenoak High School.  Both girls were joined by senior teammates Jessica Hilk and Jordyn Markovitch in the 200 medley relay.  Their winning time of 1:51.66 set a new N. E. A. C. Championship meet record.  The old mark of 1:52.55 was set by Boardman swimmers Gaby DeAscentis, Brooke Bailey, Jessica Hilk, and Colleen Manning last season.  The Spartans also set a new conference record in the 200 freestyle relay.  The old mark of 1:43.60 was set in 1991 by Warren Harding.  Boardman swimmers Hilk, Markovitch, and Bailey were joined by junior Amanda Moss in setting a new conference record time of 1:42.01.  Head Coach Terry O’Halloran had this to say about the record setting day. “The eight team Northeast Aquatic Conference has been in existence over 30 years.  Many division one college swimmers and several Olympic Trial Qualifiers have swum in this conference.  It is a very special accomplishment to set three new conference meet records.  The meet Saturday was very fast.  In the first event three teams broke the meet record in the medley relay.  It was great seeing our girls holding their trophies on the award’s platform.  In the 200 free relay both Glenoak and Boardman broke the conference record.  Senior Jordyn Markovitch held off Senior Glenoak standout swimmer Susan Franz on the final leg.  She had a terrific finish to win the race by three tenths of a second.  The atmosphere in the Wooster natatorium was electric.  Brooke Bailey was tenacious in both the 100 breaststroke and the 500 freestyle!  She took out her races at a very fast pace and never looked back.  Sarah Gonda’s conference win in the 100 backstroke was awesome!  She got off to a lighting fast start and her underwater dolphin kick outs were excellent.  The best part of the day was seeing most of the Spartan boys and girls hitting their career best times in their events.”
