Spartans Qualify 14 Swimmers and 1 Diver for the Northeast District High School Swim Championships in Cleveland
The Boardman Varsity Swim and Dive Teams will be in Cleveland on February 15 at Cleveland State University to swim in the District Championships. Three other district meets will be held across the state the same weekend to determine who gets to the State Division I Swim Championships in Canton on February 21-22. Nine girls and six boys will be making the trip to the district meet. The Spartans earned their spots by posting qualifying times at the Akron Sectional Championships held at Akron University this past weekend. Leading the Spartans will be Junior Brooke Bailey who finished 2nd in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 breaststroke at the sectional meet. Senior Jessica Hilk also qualified by placing 4th in the 100 butterfly and 9th in the 200 freestyle. The Spartans girls came in 5th place in both the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay. Hilk and Bailey were joined by teammates Junior Sarah Gonda and Senior Jordyn Markovitch on the medley. Markovitch, Hilk, and Bailey teamed with Junior Amanda Moss on the 200 free relay. Also, the 400 Free Relay swimmers were Sophomore Corie Kuras, Junior Julia Lewis, Amanda Moss, and Sarah Gonda. They posted a 3:51.78 district qualifying time and placed 9th at the sectional meet. Individual qualifiers were Kelsie Stutz in the 100 breaststroke and Junior Tyler Calpin in the 200 freestyle. Calpin teamed with Junior David Zaitzew, Sophomore Aaron DunLany, and Freshman Ethan Schwendeman to qualify the 400 Freestyle Relay. Freshman diver and district qualifier Dominic Mariano will represent the Spartans on the 1- meter boards at Cleveland State on Thursday, February 8.

“Our swims at sectionals were as expected. Almost all of our tapered swimmers swam their career best times. Our swimmers who were not rested swam fast enough to make it to districts this weekend in Cleveland. Qualifying 15 athletes to the district meet is a big accomplishment. We are looking forward to swimming fast at districts and hopefully taking swimmers to the state meet in Canton the following weekend.” (Terry O’Halloran) Spartan Diving coach Ron Navarra had this to say about Boardman’s two freshman divers, Dominic Mariano and Madison Rast. “Madison and Dominic worked hard since the beginning of the high school season. As a result they learned their 11 dive routines and qualified to dive at sectionals. Madison just missed qualifying for districts while Dominic made it. Qualifying for districts as a freshman is an outstanding accomplishment. They are dedicated athletes and have a bright future in the sport.”
