While most high schoolers use the winter break to recharge their batteries and relax, the Spartan Swim and Dive Team is excluded from this routine. “This is the time of year when we get some extra work in. We do two practices a day…one in the weight room and one at the pool. The kids are tired and maybe even miserable, but they know this is our final push prior to our championship and tournament season,” states coach Carlo Cordon. “They have their goals…we remind them to keep these in their sights during this tough time of year.” The team isn’t only preparing to swim fast, they have used their little extra time to help with community needs. “Our team is broken up into three BTUB groups (Boardman Team Unity Building).
On December 21st, 26 Spartan athletes competed in the 16th annual Christmas Invitational Meet held at Canton McKinley’s C.T. Branin Natatorium. Close to 50 teams from all across the state of Ohio attended this championship format with prelims and finals. “This is an incredibly fast meet and brings in state level competition that we can race against. We were very proud with how well all of our kids competed at this meet,” said coach Carlo Cordon. “Our bus left Boardman at 5:30AM with prelims starting at 8:30AM. Our Finals session didn’t begin until 5:30PM so it’s a grueling day. We were impressed by how fast our kids swam while being tired and qualifying many of them for the championship finals at night.”

On Saturday afternoon, the Northeast Aquatic Conference hosted its annual relay meet at Warren G. Harding High School. “This is a conference meet where all 8 teams compete in different relay events only,” stated Coach Carlo Cordon. “Our girls were coming off a big win from Friday night versus Massillon Jackson and swam a good meet on Saturday. Firestone and Wooster were very strong and pulled ahead with their depth and placed 1st and 2nd in the meet. We have some work to do, and our goal is to have ours girls ready to compete for the NEAC Conference Championships in January.”
