The Spartan boys took first places in 7 out of 12 events at the 2016 Northeast Aquatic Conference Championships at Wooster High School this past Saturday. Boardman Senior Aaron DunLany was selected by the coaches as the best male athlete of the meet. DunLany took first places in the 200 and 500 freestyle events and was also on the winning 400 free relay with teammates Senior Ethan Schwendeman and Sophomores Kyle Kimerer and Callen Aulizia. Both Kimerer and Aulizia also posted double individual wins. Kimerer took first places in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly while Aulizia won the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Aulizia’s time, 46.93, in the 100 freestyle is the 5th fastest time posted this season in the state. It is also the 2nd best time in Spartan history for that event. Head Coach Terry O’Halloran had this to say about the boys winning the conference title. “Our swimmers were ready to swim fast. Most of the guys had career best times. Callen’s time drop in the 100 free was very impressive. He went out in a 22.4 and was able to hold the lead against Senior Michael Miller from Warren Harding. Miller is one of the top ranked sprinters in Northeast Ohio.”
The Spartan girls placed 3rd in the meet and captured two conference titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Senior Corie Kuras posted a career best times of 24.81 to win the 50 free and 55.23 in the 100 freestyle. Her time in the 50 was also the second fastest in school history. “Corie had a terrific start, a great turn, and a strong finish. All of us including Corie were very excited to see her go below 25 in that race. In the 100 she was a body length behind at the final turn and was able finish strong to touch out Senior Katie Lipster from Glenoak. Our girls had a terrific meet with best times from most of the girls. Hopefully we can carry the positive momentum into the American Athletic Conference Championships this Saturday at Warren Harding High School.”
